Maldonado City: The city of San Fernando de Maldonado, capital of the department that boasts the country's major resorts, its 130 kilometres from Montevideo and typical of the cities in Uruguay's interior. It was founded in 1755 on the Laguna del Diario and two years later moved to its present location. On its narrow streets the houses are mainly low, one and two storeys, while its main square (San Fernando) is the centre of its social life. On this square stands Maldonado Cathedral - one of the oldest Catholic churches in the country - as well as the Police Headquarters, the Marco de los Reyes boundary stone and Cuartel de Dragones (Dragoons Barracks) which together with the Torre del Vigia (or Watchtower) make up the most historically valuable buildings in the city. | |
