In the heart of Punta Ballena is one of the most profuse, important botanical gardens and forestry reserves in the world. On a 192 hectare estate with over 10 kilometres of pathways, there is a wood that contains thirty-five types of natiuve trees and over three hundred exotic species from all parts of the world. this is the work of the shipping magnate, poet and writer Antonio Lussich, who in 1896 bought a piece of arid, rocky land close to the sea and, by painting spiecies brought over from the five continents, turned it into the arboretum and natural museum that bear his name. In the house where Lussich lived there are period photos illustrating the transformation the place has undergone and there's a valuable collection of French tiles.

pano_punta_ballena.jpg W : 5000px H : 1024px S : 489,96 Kb | ? 22:15 | Anders Ferie | Punta Ballena: This is one of the most splendid, picturesque spots on the Uruguayan costline, where the strikingly beautiful landscape has been embellished by the hand of man. The southernmost end of a range of hills that skirts the Sauce lagoon bears the name ´´Punta Ballena´´. Dropping down into the sea, it separates Maldonado Bay from its younger sister Portezuelo Bay. Under the shelter of this hilly rise and the existing woods, a residential neighbourhood has grown up. Punta Ballena is a heaven, in summer months, for thousands of tourists who seek a peaceful, healthy communion with nature. To truly appreciate in its entirety just how extraordinary the Creator has been with this part of the world, you need to drive up the Ruta Panorámica till you reach the lookout point on the back of the Ballena and stare out in any direction. To the south you'll be overwhelmed by the expanse of the ocean; to the east, it's the belt of sand that opens onto the bay, lakes woods and the distant fringe of modern buildings that line Punta del Este's seafront road. Westwards, you'll see Portezuelo and Solana del Mar beaches, the contour of the blue hills and, if you gaze outwards as the sun sinks into the sea, you might even see God.
